Gold and Silver Bullion Mexican Silver Libertad
This is the modern Mexico Silver Onza or Libertad as commonly know.
The series started from 1982 to current. The obverse shows the famous "winged Victoria" of Mexican Independence Victory Column in front of a landscape with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. The reverse shows Mexican coat of arms. This has been an important symbol of Mexican politics and culture for centuries. The coat of arms depicts a Mexican Golden Eagle perched upon a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake. This has a religious meaning to the people of Tenochtitlan, but other view it as a symbol of the triumph of good over evil.
This photo shows a 1985 Libertad. This design was continued until 1996 where it underwent through a modern transformation. In the modern version, the Obverse shows the Winged Victoria in another angle. The reverse shows the coat of arms of Mexico surrounded by historical mexican coats of arms.
This 1985 Libertad has a diameter of 36mm and it rather thick. It has 1 ounce of .999 pure silver.
I like the old design but then again, individual collectors have differrent preference
