North Borneo currency

The British North Borneo dollar was the currency of British North Borneo from 1882 to 1953.

In 1877, the sultan of Brunei ceded a large part of Borneo to Alfred Dent and his associates. They planned to introduce their own coinage in British North Borneo. Subsequently, the Mint Birmingham Limited struck PATTERN coins in denominations which are believed to correspond to a ¼ cent, ½ cent and 1 cent, with a central hole and Arabic inscriptions on both sides. The obverse side had the fictitious name Sultan Muhamad Jama’l-a’zam 1295 A.H (1878). In 1881, the territory was acquired by the British North Borneo Company which issued copper coins in denomination of 1 cent, followed by ½ cent in 1885. The 1 cent, 2 ½ cent and 5 cents coin in cupro-nickel were introduced in 1903/4. In 1929., the only 25 cents coin in silver was minted for the States of North Borneo. These coins which were issued at intervals up until 1941 were demonetized in 1953.
